FAQ

What is the difference between engineered and solid wood flooring?

Both engineered and solid wood floors are made from real wood, but they’re built differently. Solid wood flooring is made from a single piece of hardwood throughout, giving you an authentic, traditional wooden floor that can be sanded and refinished many times over its lifetime. Engineered wood flooring, on the other hand, is made from layers of timber with a solid wood surface. It offers extra stability and is often a better choice for rooms with fluctuating temperatures or humidity. If you want the most natural feel underfoot, with all the charm of real timber, solid wood flooring is the perfect choice.

Types and styles of solid wood flooring

Our solid wood flooring collections are chosen for their rich grain patterns and distinctive tones. Whether you love the golden warmth of oak or the deeper, luxurious hues of walnut, each plank brings individuality and character to your space.

We focus on classic plank-style flooring that showcases the true essence of natural wood. It’s wooden flooring that feels timeless, looks stunning, and lasts for generations.

Solid wood floor finishes

Your finish defines your floor’s final look and feel. We offer three key finishes, each with its own personality:

  • Lacquered: Creating a smooth, subtle sheen that’s easy to clean and offers great protection from everyday wear.

  • Brushed and oiled: Gently textured to highlight the grain, with a soft, natural finish.

  • Oiled: Deeply nourishing treatment that enhances the wood’s natural beauty while keeping its authentic matte look.

How to measure for solid wood flooring

Getting your measurements right is the first step to a perfect-fitting solid wood floor. Measure the length and width of your room at its longest and widest points, including any doorways or alcoves. Multiply those figures to get the total square metres, then add around 10% extra to allow for cuts and natural variation. If you’d prefer some expert help, our team will happily guide you through measuring for your new wooden floor.

How to fit solid wood flooring

Fitting solid wood flooring requires care, precision and the right installation method to ensure a long-lasting finish. All solid oak floors must be fully bonded to the subfloor using a high-quality flexible adhesive — this prevents movement, reduces noise, and keeps the boards stable as they naturally expand and contract. The subfloor should be clean, level and dry before installation, and we always recommend using a professional fitter to achieve the perfect result.

At Floor Giants, we have a trusted network of employed and preferred fitters across the UK – skilled professionals who share our values of customer service, craftsmanship, and satisfaction. Whether you choose supply-only or full installation, we can help you make sure your new solid wood floor is fitted to the highest standard, with care and precision from start to finish. Are solid wood floors easy to care for?

Yes, with a little regular care, your solid wood flooring will stay beautiful for decades. Natural wood loves a gentle touch and rewards you with lasting good looks.

How to clean a wood floor

Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove dust and grit, then clean with a damp (not wet) mop and a wood-friendly cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals or soaking the floor, as this can damage the wood.

Read our guide for more tips on how to clean a solid wood floor.

How to fix scratches on a wood floor

For light marks, use a specialist wood repair kit or apply a touch of matching wood oil. Deeper scratches can often be sanded and refinished – one of the big benefits of solid wood flooring.

What rooms are suitable for solid wood flooring?

Solid wood flooring works beautifully in living rooms, bedrooms, hallways, and dining areas – anywhere you want natural warmth and timeless style. We wouldn’t recommend fitting it in bathrooms or other moisture-heavy spaces, as wood can expand and contract with changes in humidity.

Can solid wood flooring work with underfloor heating?

We don’t recommend installing solid wood flooring over underfloor heating, as changes in temperature and humidity can cause the boards to expand and contract. For a stable, long-lasting result, engineered wood flooring is the best choice. Its multi-layered construction is specifically designed to handle temperature fluctuations, making it perfectly suited to heated floors.
