Conservatory Flooring

Conservatories are one of the trickiest rooms to floor. Temperature swings from cold winter mornings to hot summer afternoons put standard flooring under real stress, so material choice matters more here than almost anywhere else. At Floor Giants, we stock a broad range of conservatory flooring built to handle exactly that, from 100% waterproof LVT and rigid SPC to engineered wood and laminate options, across a wide range of styles.

FAQ

What is the best flooring for a conservatory?

The right flooring for a conservatory depends on how the room is used and how well it is insulated. Here are the most suitable conservatory flooring options:

  • Conservatory LVT flooring: Fully waterproof and available in thicknesses of 2mm to 3mm, luxury vinyl handles moisture and condensation without warping or swelling. Its multi-layer construction keeps it stable in fluctuating temperatures, and it comes in a wide range of wood and stone-effect finishes.

  • SPC luxury vinyl flooring: SPC has a rigid limestone and PVC core, making it dimensionally stable even in rooms that heat up and cool down quickly. It does not expand or contract like wood-based products do.

  • Laminate flooring for conservatory: A cost-effective choice for conservatories that are well insulated and do not get excessively hot or cold. Look for AC4-rated boards with a moisture-resistant core for better performance.

  • Conservatory Engineered wood flooring: More dimensionally stable than solid wood due to its cross-ply core, this conservatory wood flooring is a suitable option for spaces with moderate temperature variation.

  • Vinyl flooring for conservatory: A fully waterproof, seam-reduced option that works well in conservatories where moisture is a concern. Available in wood-effect and stone-effect prints.

What features should you look for in conservatory flooring?

Conservatories place specific demands on flooring that other rooms do not. Before choosing a product, check it against these key criteria:

  • Temperature stability: Products with a rigid core, such as SPC or LVT, cope far better with the wide temperature swings common in conservatories. Wood-based products with a high expansion coefficient can buckle or gap if the room overheats.

  • Waterproof or water-resistant: Condensation, damp from potted plants, and wet footwear are all common in conservatories. A fully waterproof floor, such as LVT or SPC, removes the risk of water damage entirely.

  • UV resistance: Direct sunlight through glazing can fade flooring over time. Many LVT and SPC products include UV-stabilised wear layers that slow this process. Check individual product specifications before purchasing.

  • Wear layer thickness: For an LVT or SPC product, a wear layer of 0.3mm is the minimum for a domestic conservatory. A 0.5mm wear layer offers additional protection, particularly in a room used as a dining space or playroom.

  • Underfloor heating compatibility: If your conservatory has or will have underfloor heating, confirm the product is rated as compatible before buying. Most LVT and SPC options are suitable, but always check the manufacturer's specification.

  • Ease of installation: Click-lock formats are the most straightforward for DIY installation. Dry-back LVT offers a permanent, glue-down alternative suited to conservatories where the floor must not shift.

What conservatory flooring is 100% waterproof?

LVT and SPC are the only flooring categories that are genuinely 100% waterproof through the full thickness of the board. Sheet vinyl is also fully waterproof, provided it is correctly fitted with sealed edges and no exposed joins. Laminate and engineered wood are water-resistant rather than waterproof, so prolonged exposure to standing water will cause damage. If your conservatory is prone to condensation or leaks around the glazing, or if you bring plants in and out regularly, stick to LVT, SPC, or sheet vinyl.

Can you put laminate flooring in a conservatory?

You can, but with caveats. Standard laminate has a high-density fibreboard (HDF) core that absorbs moisture and can swell or buckle if the conservatory gets very hot, very cold, or damp. If your conservatory is well insulated, double-glazed, and maintains a reasonably stable temperature year-round, a moisture-resistant laminate board is a viable choice. In poorly insulated or older conservatories with significant temperature extremes, LVT or SPC will outperform laminate in the long term.

Can you put wooden flooring in a conservatory?

Solid wood is generally not recommended for conservatories. It moves significantly with changes in heat and humidity, and conservatories routinely experience both extremes. Engineered wood, which has a real wood veneer bonded to a cross-ply timber or plywood core, performs better in these conditions. The layered construction resists cupping and gapping more effectively than solid wood. Even so, engineered wood is best suited to insulated conservatories rather than cold-frame or uninsulated structures. If you are set on a wood appearance, LVT with a realistic wood-grain finish offers the same look without the movement concerns.

Conservatory flooring ideas

The right look for a conservatory depends on how the room connects to the rest of the house and the amount of natural light it receives.

  • Light oak effect: Pale oak finishes, whether in LVT, laminate, or engineered wood, reflect sunlight and keep the room feeling open.

  • Stone and tile effects: LVT stone tiles mimic travertine, slate, or limestone and suit conservatories styled as garden rooms or orangeries. They are cooler underfoot in summer.

  • Herringbone patterns: A herringbone layout adds a decorative finish that works particularly well in larger conservatories. Available in both LVT and parquet formats. See LVT herringbone or parquet herringbone.

  • Dark and neutral tones: Smoked oak, greige, and charcoal-toned boards give a contemporary finish and are more forgiving with everyday dirt and scuffs.

Do you offer samples of your conservatory flooring?

Yes. We offer a free, unlimited sample service so you can test colours and finishes in your actual conservatory before committing to an order. Seeing a sample under your specific glazing and lighting conditions makes a genuine difference when choosing between similar tones. Order free samples directly from any product page, and they will be delivered to your door.

Can you lay flooring directly on concrete in a conservatory?

Yes, in most cases, but the concrete base must be level, dry, and structurally sound first. A moisture reading above the acceptable threshold for your chosen product will cause problems over time, particularly for wood-based floors. If the slab is damp, a damp-proof membrane or a moisture-barrier underlay is required before laying anything on top. LVT and SPC with a pre-attached underlay are typically the easiest products to install directly over concrete. Engineered wood and laminate also work over concrete, provided the subfloor passes a moisture test. Our underlay guide explains the types of underlay suited to different subfloor conditions.

Can you help with fitting conservatory flooring?

Yes. Floor Giants offers a nationwide floor fitting service. Whether you are fitting flooring in a conservatory for the first time or replacing an existing floor, our installers work to high standards and respect your home. Alternatively, if you prefer to install yourself, our guides on how to lay vinyl flooring and how to lay laminate flooring walk you through the process step by step.
