FAQ

What are the benefits of LVT flooring?

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) flooring offers the perfect blend of style, durability, and practicality. Designed to replicate natural materials like wood and stone, it provides a realistic look with a warm, comfortable feel underfoot. Fully waterproof and resistant to scratches and stains, LVT is ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and busy living spaces. It’s easy to install, simple to maintain, and compatible with underfloor heating, making it a versatile choice for any home. With a wide range of designs and long-lasting performance, LVT delivers premium style at an affordable price.

What's the difference between luxury vinyl and standard vinyl flooring?

The key difference between luxury vinyl flooring and standard vinyl flooring lies in their construction, appearance, and performance. Standard vinyl flooring (often supplied in sheet form) is thinner and more flexible, making it suitable for budget-friendly installations but less realistic in appearance. It typically has a simple printed design layer and a minimal protective coating, which makes it less durable in high-traffic areas.

Whereas Luxury vinyl flooring (LVT or SPC) is a multi-layered product designed for greater realism and durability. It features a high-definition design layer that replicates wood or stone textures, topped with a wear layer available in 0.3mm, 0.5mm, or 0.7mm thicknesses.

What’s the difference between LVT and SPC flooring?

Both LVT and SPC flooring offer the beauty of natural materials with the durability of modern luxury vinyl. However, they differ in structure, installation, and practical benefits:

LVT (Stick-Down Flooring):

  • Installed using adhesive, also known as glue-down LVT.

  • Allows for creative layouts, such as borders, inlay strips, and herringbone or parquet patterns.

  • Individual planks or tiles can be replaced easily if damaged, without disturbing the rest of the floor.

  • Requires a perfectly smooth and level subfloor, as all rigidity comes from the base.

  • Provides a softer, warmer feel underfoot, ideal for comfortable living spaces.

  • Usually have a total thickness of up to 3mm, offering a flexible installation ideal for smooth, level subfloors.

SPC Click LVT:

  • Features a rigid stone-based core for added strength and stability.

  • Uses a click-lock system, making it quicker and easier to install.

  • More forgiving on uneven subfloors, as it doesn’t rely on adhesive.

  • Always includes an integrated underlay for comfort and sound reduction.

  • Extremely durable and waterproof, perfect for busy homes or commercial areas.

  • SPC flooring starts at around 4mm thick and always includes an integrated underlay for added comfort and sound reduction.

Both LVT and SPC are 100% waterproof and easy to maintain, so your choice depends on whether you value the design versatility of LVT or the quick, forgiving installation of SPC. For more information, read our guide about the difference between glue-down and click-down vinyl.

Which rooms work best with LVT?

Luxury vinyl excels throughout your home—from moisture-prone kitchens and bathrooms, where its 100% waterproof properties shine, to high-traffic hallways and living areas, where its durability benefits. The flooring works equally well in bedrooms, conservatories, offices, and basements, making it one of the most versatile options. How thick should luxury vinyl flooring be for my home?

The overall thickness of luxury vinyl flooring has little impact on durability — it’s the wear layer that truly determines how well the floor performs over time. Standard wear layer thicknesses are:

  • 0.3mm for residential use

  • 0.5mm for commercial use

  • 0.7mm for heavy commercial environments

In general, stick-down LVT products range from 2.5–3mm thick in total, while click (SPC) products typically measure between 4–6.5mm thick. Choosing the right wear layer ensures your floor can withstand the level of traffic in your space while maintaining its appearance for years to come.

Is luxury vinyl flooring really waterproof?

Yes, all luxury vinyl flooring offers complete waterproof protection, making it perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, utility rooms and any space where spills or moisture might occur. The waterproof core prevents damage from moisture exposure; however, while the flooring itself is waterproof, it isn’t completely watertight — water can seep between the joins. Because the product contains no wood, any water that does get through will not damage the floor itself.

Can I install luxury vinyl flooring myself?

Many luxury vinyl options feature user-friendly click-lock systems that float over your existing subfloor without glue or nails, making DIY installation achievable for confident homeowners. Glue down vinyl is a traditional method in which vinyl tiles are glued to the subfloor with adhesive. Proper subfloor preparation is essential for all installation methods – the surface must be level, clean, and dry. How long does LVT last?

Quality luxury vinyl flooring lasts 15-25 years in residential settings with proper care. The lifespan depends on the wear layer thickness – thicker wear layers provide better scratch and stain resistance. Regular sweeping, gentle mopping with pH-neutral cleaners, and using furniture pads help maintain your floor's appearance for decades.

What maintenance does luxury vinyl flooring need?

Luxury vinyl requires minimal maintenance - simply sweep or vacuum regularly to remove debris, and damp mop occasionally with a manufacturer-recommended cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals, excessive water, and abrasive tools. Place mats at entrances and use felt pads under furniture to prevent scratches and maintain your floor's pristine condition.
